Too much $ for that old Savage. Offer him $1000, let him talk you up to $1250, and walk away if he doesn't take it. That bike sold new for about $2500. There are other, newer Savages for sale. Check out e-bay and some other resources. Also check this forum, there are sometimes bikes for sale here and shipping isn't that expensive.
My '87 Savage made several long trips (3000 - 5000 miles in two weeks or less) and I never had a problem. I owned that bike for three years and put 30,000 miles on it with no problems. It's not a high performance machine so if you want to go flying down the road at 95+mph look elsewhere. If you want to cruise down the road and enjoy the world, get a Savage.
